Candace Steele was born and raised in the Minneapolis area, but moved to the Bay
Area in California as a young woman and went to nursing school at Stanford University. She met her husband on a Sierra
Club backpacking trip in Yosemite Park, married, and raised three girls, while working as a nurse at Stanford hospital and
teaching childbirth classes. After her kids were adults, she went back to school to get her Masters Degree in Marriage,
Family and Child counseling, and worked for a while counseling perpetrators of domestic violence.
When her daughter, Danae, came out to her in 1978, Candace struggled for a while
with it, read everything she could find about gay and lesbian people, and then became a huge advocate, not only for her daughter,
but for all GLBT people, and became very involved with PFLAG. She did a lot of work in the Ashland, Oregon, area and
helped start the Skagit PFLAG chapter in 2000/2001.
Candace has had a lifelong love of animals, the outdoors, quilting, and classical
music, and continues to love all these things.
She now lives in assisted living facility in Boise, ID. The address
is 10250 W. Smoke Ranch Dr., #127, Boise, ID 83709. Her phone number is 208-376-0686.
